Hudson County was originally home to the Lenape Indians. Hudson County is named for Henry Hudson. It is also the oldest self-governing municipality in New Jersey. In 1709 Hackensack became the county's seat. The Morris Canal, early steam railroads, and the devlopment of the harbor stimulated growth and in September 1840, Hudson County was created from portiions of Bergen and of some Essex County. Bergen Township was created in1798 and Union City was created from portions of Hudson County in 1925. Many famous manufacturers were established in the county including Colgate, Dixon and Maxwell House. The county since the mid-1990s has seen development and a population increase.
